Richard N. Werner

Born Aug. 23, 1931, to Paul and Julia Werner, passed Sept. 22, 2008, due to complications from renal failure and cancer.

He worked on the family farm in Kahlotus, Wash., and graduated from Gonzaga Prep after the family moved to Spokane. He worked various jobs throughout his life which took him to Mississippi and across the South. He finally settled in Warden and Othello, working for the Columbia Basin Irrigation District where he retired in 1991. He loved to hunt, fish, camp, fly, travel and play cards with family and friends. A true storyteller, he loved sharing his adventures with all those around him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia (Miller) Werner, stepdaughter, Nancy C. Knapp, parents Paul and Julia Werner, siblings Paul Werner, John Werner, Elizabeth Alexander and Carolyn Martin.

He is survived by two daughters, Helen (Jerry) Smith, Julie (Steve) Schultz, grandson Paul (Cindy) Schultz, stepson Ken (Terrie) Austin, stepdaughter Vicki Austin, sister-in-law Ila Werner, numerous grand and great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and cousins.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the NWMAC, 2316 W First Ave., Spokane, WA 99201 or Hospice House/Hospice of Spokane, P.O. Box 2215, Spokane, WA 99210. Graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Oct. 4 at St. Joseph Cemetery, E. 17825 Trent Ave., Spokane, WA with a gathering for family and friends afterward at Central Park Condos, 6011 E. 6th Ave., Spokane Valley, WA.
