LaCrosse-Washtucna 56, Odessa 8; Prosser 33, Othello 28

KENNEWICK - The Othello Huskies football team couldn't avenge an early season loss to the Prosser Mustangs in the quarterfinal round of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association 2A playoffs.

Prosser came from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat Othello 33-28 at Kennewick's Lampson Stadium.

The Huskies jumped out to an early lead when senior wide receiver Ryley Peterson caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Marc Garza for a 7-0 lead.

Prosser would respond in the second quarter when Dustin Crawford caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jordan Durbin to tie the game 7-7.

Othello would regain the lead on the ground when senior running back Lee Gomez scored on a 2-yard touchdown run.

Gomez finished the night with 235 yard rushing on 30 carries.

The Mustangs would continue to stay with the Huskies when Dominic Garza caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Durbin to again tie the game, this time at 14-14.

With the game tied, the Huskies marched down the field against the Mustangs defense. Senior running back Aaron Simmons would score on a 3-yard touchdown run to give Othello a 21-14 halftime advantage over their Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) rivals.

The teams continued to battle in the third quarter when Prosser tied the game at 21-21 following a 17-yard touchdown pass from Durbin to wide receiver Kirby Moore.

The Mustangs would take their first lead of the game when Matt Young caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Durbin. Othello blocked the extra point attempt as Prosser held a 27-21 advantage.

With the Huskies trailing 27-21 in the fourth quarter, the Othello defense forced a Prosser punt deep in their own territory.

Othello junior punt returner Devon Lind fielded the Prosser punt at midfield. Lind raced behind a wall of blockers and found the end zone and Othello regained the lead with a successful extra point attempt.

With only five minutes left in the game, Lind had given Othello a 28-27 advantage over the defending 2A state champions.

Prosser would not be denied in the game's final minutes when Dominic Garza caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Durbin. Prosser missed the two-point conversion and led 33-28 with a little more than three minutes to play.

With the fate of their season in their own hands, the Huskies attempted to respond to the Prosser touchdown.

Marc Garza led his team down the field with an opportunity to advance to the semifinals and knock off CWAC league champion Prosser.

However, Marc Garza threw an interception in the end zone with 20 seconds left to play which would seal Othello's fate and ended their season.
