Othello eliminates Colville for second consecutive season

OTHELLO - The Othello Huskies battled the Colville Indians in Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) 2A football playoff action Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies faced the Indians in the first round of the playoffs for the third consecutive season, eliminating Colville for the second straight season with the 28-21 victory.

The Huskies came out at the beginning of the game fired up and controlled the possession of the football for much of the first quarter.

Othello drew first blood on a 2-yard touchdown run from senior running back Aaron Simmons to take a 7-0 lead.

The Indians couldn't respond to the Othello score and the Huskies forced a Colville punt and took possession of the football.

Othello would continue to build on their lead late in the first quarter.

With only 90 seconds remaining in the quarter, senior quarterback Marc Garza threw a 26-yard touchdown pass, hitting senior wide receiver Jakob Scott for a 14-0 Othello lead..

The Huskies shut out Indians in the first quarter but that wouldn't slow Colville down as the second quarter began.

The Indians took control of the ball and drove down the field.

Colville narrowed the Othello advantage to 14-7 when the Indians scored on a 5-yard touchdown run.

Othello responded to Colville's second quarter score.

Garza led the Huskies down the field before senior running back Lee Gomez scored on an 11-yard run, propelling Othello to a 21-7 halftime lead.

Othello dominated the first half of play but Colville was able to hold the Huskies scoreless in the third quarter.

The Indians were able to pull within 21-14 following a nine-play, 66-yard scoring drive.

Othello began the fourth quarter with a 10-play, 67-yard scoring drive capped off by a 22-yard touchdown run from Garza.

The score sealed the Indians' fate.

Colville was unable to overcome the 14-point deficit as the Indians only managed to narrow the gap to 28-21.

With the victory Othello will travel to Kennewick this Saturday to take on Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) champion Prosser.

Prosser defeated Othello 54-21 in CWAC play this season and Othello assistant coach Pete Perez said his team is looking forward to the rematch.

"Hopefully the kids will step up and make it a good ball game," Perez said.

Simmons said his team knows the importance of next week's game with Prosser.

"It's a big game, beating them is the biggest thing," Simmons said.
