Student athletes vie for state titles

After a weekend of state competitions, local student athletes return to school with medals and awards.

State champions

Othello's Courtney Kirkwood won the gold in two events at the 2A state track meet. The senior ran the 100-meter high hurdles in 14.79 seconds and threw 151' in the javelin to take first place in both.

The Othello fastpitch softball team won the 2A state championship, ending their season with a 26-1 record. The girls shut out four teams to win the title.

Ephrata's Wes Chamberlain won the 2A state pole vault title for the second consecutive year with a record-breaking jump of 15'5". The junior broke the previous set record of 15'4".

The team was defeated by Lakeside 9 Mile Falls 11-2; beat Lynden Christian 10-5; lost to Nooksack Valley 13-0

The team lost in the second consolation round to Chimacum High School.

Todd Harr and Tyler Van Heusden were defeated by Eric Guenther and Kashif Kahn of WF West High School 6-2, 6-2; defeated by Taylor Benge and Jerry Arroyo of Fife High School 6-4, 2-6, 7-6.
