Community honors the fallen on Memorial Day
MOSES LAKE - While many enjoyed the three-day weekend, participating in barbecues or the Spring Festival, many in the Columbia Basin paused to recognize Memorial Day.
At the Moses Lake Cemetery Sunday, poles supporting the American flag lined the paved walkway through the grass, smaller flags stood beside headstones and fresh flowers were placed.
A ceremony was held in the morning and visitors continued to pay respects afterward.
Warden residents Rob and Joann Shuler come each year with flowers.
"It's a tradition. We remember our loved ones who passed away," said Rob.
He said on Memorial Day it's important to remember what was given to us by those who came before us.
Dyanne Solders kneeled, adorning the sites where some family members rest with flowers.
"It's a special time to put aside, remembering those that we've lost and those who have died, especially those who have served our country," she said.
She added it's not the only time she remembers those who gave their lives for their country.
"We remember them always."
Mark Benson of Benson's Family Funeral Service said Memorial Day is to remember.
"Freedom and liberty's hope came on the backs of the men who fought in the wars. My feeling is that Memorial Day is omnipotently important. We are so happy to help with Memorial Day," he said.
Benson said he appreciates the interactions he has with the community and the turnout at the cemetery.
"There are so many kind people out. My personal thanks to all of the wonderful people of Grant County."
