Aktion club donates books to library

Children encouraged to read 'lots' for summer program

MOSES LAKE - Before the new books at the Moses Lake Library could even be unpacked and cataloged, a child wanted to check one out.

It's a good omen for the books donated to the library Wednesday by members of Kiwanis' Aktion Club, who met for the Pacific Northwest District Aktion Club Conference May 17 at Moses Lake High School. City of Moses Lake Council Member Dick Deane was the speaker and guest for the conference opening service.

"Everyone at the conference brought a child's book," said conference chair Joann Hosszu. "Some of them brought more than just one."

Clubs from Moses Lake, Yakima, Spokane; Oliver, British Columbia, and Osoyoos, British Columbia, were in attendance. Osoyoos members brought the most books, Hosszu said.

"We're so proud we're going to expand our library, or a new library," she said. "I have been privileged to be downstairs when they were teaching the children. They teach all ages, and these books cover all ages, from babies all the way up. It was such a worthwhile program, I thought this would be a good thing for us to do under the conference, because we always want a project."

Three boxes of books were donated to the library.

"Children's books always enhance a library," Moses Lake Library Circulation Manager Barbara Gallaway said. "We have summer reading program coming up. The children just flock in here to get books and sign up. We encourage them to read lots of books in the summer time."

Kiwanis is the sponsoring organization for Aktion and a number of other organizations, Kiwanis Division 58 of the Pacific Northwest Lieutenant Governor Joe Suppiger explained.

Aktion Club consists of adults with disabilities, Hosszu said.

"We have a fantastic array of people who are in the Aktion Club," she said.

Hosszu and Suppiger said the members had a lot of fun gathering books for the donation to the library.

"(I hope) the children read them and have fun, like I did when I was a kid," Hosszu said.
