Chiefs compete in tennis quarterfinals

SPOKANE - Columbia Basin League and the Greater Spokane League 4A regional boys and girls tennis action continued with the quarterfinals match ups.

In men's play, the pair of Ben Nye and Connor Lange of Moses Lake took on Ethan Burns and Ethan Vaughn of Mead. Nye and Lange were defeated in a lopsided loss 1-6,1-6 sending them to the consolation quarterfinals, according to Moses Lake boys tennis coach Jon Wrigley.

In the consolation quarterfinals, Lange and Nye beat Mead's Ryan Gerbing and Bryan Lee 6-4, 6-2.

Nye and Lange fought through the consolation semifinals against Greg Basel and Ricardo Hepp of Walla Walla, defeating them 6-2, 6-0. That set up the battle for the last transfer position to the state tournament, pitting Lange and Nye against Burns and Vaughn of Mead again. The match came down to a 4-6, 0-6 loss for Lange and Nye, ending their state championship hopes.

The Lady Chiefs sent the pair Megan Frederick and Charleen Johnson to represent Moses Lake. Fredrick and Johnson were defeated 0-6, 0-6 by the GSL team from Mead. According to Moses lake girls tennis coach Jon Valencia, this sent the pair to the consolation round with a chance to continue on to the state finals.

Consolation round action then saw Johnson and Fredrick defeat a pair from Gonzaga Prep 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1.

In the final round, Megan Frederick and Charleen Johnson defeated a pair of Richland players 6-2, 6-2, giving them a third place finish and sending them to the 4A state championship tournament next week in Vancouver.
