Moses Lake Senior Center honors moms
Funds support Meals on Wheels
MOSES LAKE - Honoring Mom is also a good way to aid the Moses Lake Senior Center this weekend.
For the first time, the center offers a Mother's Day breakfast Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to noon at its location at 608 E. Third Ave.
The breakfast includes hash browns, link sausages, eggs, pancakes, coffee and juice. Cost to attend is $5. Tickets are available at the door.
The event includes a silent auction with about 120 items, said Mike Conley, member of the center's board of directors. Money from the auction goes toward the senior center, while proceeds from the breakfast will go to the center's Meals on Wheels program.
"Financially we're way behind on our Meals on Wheels program," Conley explained. "And so this was kind of my brainchild. We've sold over 1,000 tickets and most all of the items we're going to use in the breakfast have been donated, so we should be making $5,000 to help offset the Meals on Wheels costs."
A recent donation by the Moses Lake Chamber of Commerce was a surprise, Conley noted.
"Between the combination of these things, the Meals on Wheels program, we've kind of gotten it to a break-even situation now," he said. "There's some other things that need help, and so we're going to be working on those."
Conley believes the senior center will try to put the breakfast on annually.
"You can't go out and buy breakfast any place for $5, so it's a good bargain," he said. "People need to bring their mothers, of course. That's the benefit of this: Mom doesn't have to cook on Saturday."
Conley recommends those people who haven't been by the center in a while stop in and look around.
"The place is looking really good," he said. "I had a lot of people that have been in there for the first time in quite a while, and they were pretty impressed with how the place is cleaned up and bright. We're pretty proud of what we've accomplished in the last year."
