Chiefs tennis makes 'solid showing' in Spokane

SPOKANE - The Moses Lake Chiefs traveled to Spokane to compete in the Inland Empire tennis tournament on Friday and Saturday. The tournament featured top players from Spokane, Connell, Mead, Chewelah, Clark Fork and Richland.

Moses Lake track coach Jon Wrigley was impressed by the team - they "did pretty well" and had a "solid showing," he said.

Adrian Juarez won the consolation bracket, a feat he's accomplished three times, each with different partners.

"He's pretty consistent at that position," Wrigley said.

Ben Nye of Moses Lake had a good day reaching the quarterfinals for the second straight season.

On the girls' side, Shari Pearson lost to Hanford 0-6, 0-6 in the first round. She was then defeated 2-6, 1-6 in the consolation bracket.

Rachel Goodrich lost to Lakeside 4-6, 6-4, 4-6. She won 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 in the consolation bracket. Goodrich then lost in the second round 3-6, 1-6.

Megan Frederick and Charleen Johnson won their preliminary match 6-0, 6-1. The pair then fell 4-6, 4-6 to a Gonzaga Prep team.

Rachel Korth and Rachel Hofstetter won their first round match 6-2, 6-3. They then lost in the second round to Colville 2-6, 3-6.

In mixed doubles Emily White and Danny Reis lost their first round match 0-6, 4-6 but turned around to win their first match in the consolation bracket 6-1, 6-1. The second round saw White and Reis win 6-3, 6-2. The pair then fell to University High 0-6, 4-6. They ended their day with a win over Connell 6-0, 6-2.

Doubles action saw Nanako Era and David Asfour defeat a team from Chewelah 6-1, 6-2 in the first round. They then were defeated by Richland 3-6, 2-6.
