Southridge, Moses Lake split doubleheader
Chiefs 3, 5
Suns 6, 4
MOSES LAKE - The Chiefs' varsity softball team played host to Southridge on Friday, splitting a doubleheader.
Moses Lake coach Dave Gregory said the games were "very exciting."
Southridge overcame the Chiefs in the first game by a score of 6-3. Shayla May of Moses Lake pitched with Shelby Gonzales catching. Shawnee Durbin went 2-for-4 with two runs and May hit a double, ending the game 2-for-3 with one run, Gregory said.
Moses Lake turned things around in the second game, beating the Suns 4-5. Gonzales was catcher again, this time for Samantha Smith.
Gonzales went 3-for-4 with a double in the bottom of the seventh inning, after which Lacey Padilla went in as a pinch-runner. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Vanessa Hernandez (2-for-3) brought Padilla, the winning run, in with a base hit.
Gregory said the Lady Chiefs next play on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Larson Playfield in a loser-out game as the beginning of district playoffs. The district tournament continues on Saturday, when the four qualifying teams will play for seeding in regionals.
