Appreciate your mom year-round

As Mother's Day approaches this Sunday, one can't help but notice the array of greeting cards and other store promotions aimed at cashing in on the special day.

I admit I'm guilty of procrastinating and joined others standing in long store lines the day before Mother's Day.

My approach to gift-giving hasn't changed much since I became a mom two years ago.

I still hate the long lines and put my shopping off until the last minute.

But I am more insightful and appreciative of the work many moms do every day.

The cards, dinners out and flowers are very thoughtful and likely appreciated by your mom.

But consider this: the day-to-day actions mean more than a card, flowers or chocolates only given on May 11.

Especially when a mom's work is year-round and doesn't stop for a holiday.

I can't stress that enough, although I've taken my mom for granted and all that she does. I didn't realize all she did until I became a mom.

Your mom's life started changing the months before your birth. As she prepared for your arrival, her regular doctor appointments watched your development and yes, her growth too.

I laugh now at some of the maternity clothes I bought in a mad dash to have something to wear.

Some of the clothes were cute and some of the more tent-like outfits were bought at a great price just in case I couldn't fit into anything else later.

A loud plaid maternity top and a bright blue flowered blouse still hang in my downstairs closet as reminders.

After nine long months, I remember how excited I was to finally meet my daughter Maria and see what she looked like.

Today, she's a toddler who loves to follow me and takes in all that I do.

She mimics what I say, duplicates how I sit and stays only a few steps behind me.

I just hope I can live up to her expectations.
