Tuesday's prep sports recaps

TOPPENISH - Behind the strong pitching of Kelly Wells, Colby Melburn and Jackson Hodges, the Quincy Jackrabbits got back to .500 in Central Washington Athletic Conference baseball play on Tuesday.

Wells, Melburn and Hodges held the Toppenish Wildcats to one hit, striking out 12 in a 15-0 win. Melburn also had a huge contribution at the plate, finishing 4 for 4 with three runs scored, two batted in and four stolen bases.

The Jacks put the Wildcats on their heels early, scoring seven times in the first. Quincy added three in the third and five in the fourth, enacting the mercy rule after five innings. Quincy totaled 12 hits.

The Jacks go to Selah on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Selah 4, Othello 3

OTHELLO - The Huskies gave the perennial powerhouse Vikings all they could handle, but Selah used small ball to its advantage in its CWAC win.

Selah's Tyler Porter broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning with a well-placed suicide squeeze bunt. That was enough for starting pitcher Jake Fife, who limited Othello to three hits and struck out seven.

Isaiah Suarez took the loss for the Huskies despite going all seven innings and allowing six hits.

QUINCY - The Jacks outdueled the rival Tigers on Tuesday, getting the only goal they'd need in the 18th minute.

Quincy had 16 shots on goal to Ephrata's three, and Francisco Tafoya earned the shutout in goal for the Jacks.

Quincy travels to Wapato today for a 4 p.m. kickoff, while Ephrata hosts Prosser at 6 p.m.

OTHELLO - Otoniel Gonzales and Adrian Montes tallied before halftime as the Huskies improved to 3-1 in CWAC play.

Gonzalez got his goal two minutes off an assist from Ezra Riojas. In the final minute of the first half, B.G. Guzman set up Montes to make it 2-0.

Othello goalkeeper Erik Suarez made two saves for the shutout, and Ellensburg keeper Kessler Abbott stopped five shots.
