Prep tennis recaps

MOSES LAKE - Moses Lake's boys tennis team has not been known historically as a powerhouse program.

Jon Wrigley's squad may be starting to change that perception.

The Chiefs continued their hot start to 2008 on Tuesday, beating the Davis Pirates 5-2 to improve their record to 5-0 overall, 2-0 in Columbia Basin League 4A play.

Moses Lake hasn't had a start like this, Wrigley said, since the school jumped back into the 4A classification. And the Chiefs are doing it with a relatively inexperienced group, particularly in doubles, which won all three matches against Davis.

"Our depth was a concern at the start of the year because we have three or four new bodies filling those positions," the coach said. "They're putting themselves in a position to win, which I've really enjoyed."

In the No. 1 doubles bout, Moses Lake's David Asfour and Danny Reis pounded out a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ethan Maier and Chris Parrish. At No. 2, Ethan Hall and Kyle Livingston had a relatively easy 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Peter Moran and Dan O'Connell. The third-seeded team of Dominic Cacchiotti and Derek McMains got past David Funk and Tony Radovich, 6-4, 6-2.

"They're hitting the shots in the right spots and they're making it look easy, which is nice," Wrigley said of his doubles teams.

Perhaps the only downer of the day for the Chiefs was No. 1 single Ben Nye losing his first match of the year, a 4-6, 2-6 setback to defending district champion Abe Chang.

"Abe's a very mentally strong player," Wrigley said. "Abe just had a few more tools in the shed and had a little more experience at that level of match."

Second-seeded Adrian Juarez and third-seeded Connor Lange made up for Nye's defeat by staying on track. Juarez downed Sebastian Barrett (6-1, 6-0) and Lange defeated John Hildenbrand (6-1, 6-4).

Moses Lake's fourth seed, Paul Asfour, dropped a 3-6, 3-6 final to Ben Chang.

After a Thursday afternoon non-league match at West Valley, the Chiefs head to Richland for what could be their toughest yet - a date with the defending league champion Bombers on Saturday at 10 a.m.

"They're deep and really talented - they return all 10 players from last year," Wrigley said. "It's going to be a good challenge for us, but there's nothing for us to lose. The pressure's on them to keep winning."

Moses Lake's girls had an opportunity to pick up their first CBL win, but lost a pair of three-set matches that made the difference in a 4-3 victory for Davis.

Top-seeded single Charleen Johnson earned a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Briana Tamaki. Third-seeded Emily White was also a winner in three sets, downing Lesli Baker 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

At No. 2 singles, Moses Lake's Megan Frederick took a hard-fought first set over Kate Patterson, winning a 7-5 tiebreaker, but lost the last two sets 3-6, 1-6. No. 4 seed Shari Pearson lost a 5-7, 0-6 decision to Jennifer Mendez.

The other key loss for the Chiefs occurred at No. 3 doubles, where Reilly Hourigan and Jessica Massart lost to Brooke Lybeck and Erica Ojeda. Hourigan and Massart cruised to a 6-1 victory in the first set, but fell 3-6, 3-6 in the last two.

The No. 2 team of Rachel Korth and Rachel Hofstetter picked up a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Jessica Sachara and Erika Torres, while the No. 1 duo of Nanako Era and Rachel Goodrich fell to Lilian Bravo and Teresa Lopez (3-6, 0-6).
