Ephrata track teams sharp at Wolftrack Invitational

WAPATO — Jerome Prescod’s victories in the high jump and triple jump propelled the Ephrata boys track and field squad to a first-place finish at Tuesday’s Wolftrack Invitational meet.

The Tigers also earned the girls’ championship as Cheyanna Flint finished first in the triple jump and long jump. Othello was third, scoring 83 points.

Ephrata’s boys scored 195.5 points to outdistance second-place Zillah by 47.5 points. Othello’s boys were fifth in the seven-team competition.

Ephrata’s Trystan Mann bolted to a winning time of 23.81 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Teammate Ryan Fleenor was the top shot putter, going 39 feet, 7 inches. Prescod took the high jump crown at 6-2 and the triple jump at 41 feet.

Tiger junior Wes Chamberlain cleared 14-9 1/2 to win the pole vault. Othello’s Alvaro Barajas was tops in the discus, tossing 120-1.

The Tigers’ 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams both came away with victories.

On the girls’ side, Huskie star Courtney Kirkwood picked up victories in the 100-meter dash (13.32) and 300-meter hurdles (52.06). Teammate Tiffany Martinez won the shot (31-7).

Ephrata senior sprinter Lexi Lange took the 200-meter title (28.62), while freshman Danielle Friend won the 3,200 meters (12:34.4).

Brandi Eloff won the high jump for Ephrata at 4-6, and teammate Erin Boland grabbed the pole vault title (9-0).

The Tigers’ 400 and 800 relay teams were each victorious — the former in 55.14 and the latter in 2:03.7.

Girls Tennis

Moses Lake 6, Sunnyside 1

MOSES LAKE — The Chiefs had few problems in knocking off the visiting Grizzlies in a non-league match.

The Chiefs swept the four singles matches, all in straight sets. Top seed Charleen Johnson was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Regina Mendez, and No. 2 seed Megan Frederick beat Madonna Gonzalez by the same score.

At No. 3, Emily White was a 6-2, 6-2 victor against Elvira Chiprez. No. 4 seed Shari Pearson topped Jamie Ziljastra (6-2, 6-4).

Moses Lake’s No. 1 doubles duo of Nanako Era and Rachel Goodrich downed Sunnyside’s Cindy Guidino and Crystal Sandoval (7-5, 6-4), while the third-seeded team of Jessica Massart and Reilly Hourigan outdueled Bo Kim and Avalon Valencia (6-2, 3-6, 7-5).

The Chiefs’ only loss came at No. 2 doubles, where Sunnyside’s Hanna Marro and Sasha Castro earned a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win over Rachel Hofstetter and Rachel Korth.

Golf

Royal teams sweep

YAKIMA — Royal’s D.J. Solis was the boys’ medalist on Tuesday, propelling the Knights to a non-league win over Riverside Christian and La Salle at Yakima Country Club’s par-72 course.

Solis finished at 82, 10 shots ahead of Riverside Christian’s Matt Crockett. The Knights shot 272 as a team, nine strokes better than Riverside Christian. La Salle finished at 341.

Royal’s girls shots 294 to tie La Salle for the team title, though the Lady Knights’ individual results were unavailable. Riverside Christian, which finished at 316, got an 88 from Joy Attaway for medalist honors.

Baseball

Othello 24, Quincy 1

QUINCY — The Huskies jumped all over the Jackrabbits in CWAC play, getting big performances from James Valdez, JP Underhill and Marc Garza in the process.

Othello scored five times in the first and fourth innings, seven times in the second, and wrapped up the mercy rule win after five innings by collecting 25 hits.

Marc Garza, Chris Bruneti and Michael Garza combined to hold Quincy to three hits, and the Huskies also capitalized on six errors by the Jacks.

Valdez was 5 for 5 at the plate with a triple. Underhill went 3 for 4 with a triple and a home run, driving in four runs. Garza went 4 for 6, driving in three with a pair of doubles. He struck out four during his two innings of work on the mound.

Ellensburg 14, Ephrata 3

ELLENSBURG — The Bulldogs scored 10 runs in the third inning and moved to 3-0 in CWAC play with a victory over the Tigers.

Ephrata managed only four hits off Ellensburg hurler Dan Stanovich, who went the distance and struck out seven. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs had 10 hits and knocked starter Travis Ruffin out during their third-inning explosion.

Stanovich was 1 for 3 at the plate with a triple, while teammate Matt Herbert also tripled and drove in three. Ellensburg’s Ethan Sterkel was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, and Jeremy Rossow had two RBI.

Boys Soccer

Davis 1, Moses Lake 0

YAKIMA — Even the Chiefs’ high-powered offense had no answers for a Pirates’ defense that hasn’t allowed a goal in its first four games.

Andres Ruis scored with four minutes left in regulation for Davis, assisted by Adolfo Mora. The Pirates improved to 4-0 overall, 2-0 in Columbia Basin League action, while the Chiefs fell to 2-1, 1-1.

Mitch Harder made five saves for Moses Lake, while Joel Campos and Andrez Ramos had five for the Pirates.

Selah 2, Ephrata 1

SELAH — Ephrata’s Ramon Sanchez tied the scored with an unassisted tally in the 64th minute, but the Tigers surrendered the game-winner six minutes later.

The Vikings won the CWAC contest when Johnny Martinez found the net in the 70th minute. Martinez also assisted on the only goal of the first half, setting up Yobany Balbuena in the fifth minute. Selah goalkeeper Sean Kendrick made three saves.
