Solis sends Royal golfers to season-opening win

OTHELLO - D.J. Solis shot a five-over 75 on Friday as the Royal Knights boys team won the Othello Invite golf tournament.

Royal topped the 14-team leaderboard with a 205 cumulative score, fending off West Valley's junior varsity by one shot. Othello and Ephrata finished in a tie for third at 210 strokes, with Warden 10th (238) and Quincy 11th (240).

Solis finished four strokes in front of Othello's Sam Para for the individual crown, while Ephrata's Austin Key shot an 80 to tie for third with Highland's Min Woo Park. Royal's Trevor Iverson was sixth at 83, and Othello's Jared Kummer was seventh at 85.

Each team competed with five golfers, and the two highest scores were eliminated after nine holes.

Other scoring competitors included Royal's Eric Spartveit (103), Othello's Dylan Jahns (94), and Ephrata's Chase Millard (89) and Cody Cummings (93). Quincy's scoring trio was Mike Evens (97), Kevin Hille (97) and Kyle Arnall (99). Warden's scoring trio was Nate Stott (94), Ben Bisnett (97) and Chris Kalous (106).

Kennewick Invitational

KENNEWICK - The Moses Lake boys finished in 12th place on Friday at the 24-squad meet at Tri-City Country Club, a par-65 course.

Zac McDougall paced the Chiefs by shooting a five-over 70, tying for seventh place alongside Walla Walla's Drew Reinland and Eastmont's Brady Parsons.

Hanford took the team title with 290 total strokes, followed by Richland (294) and Southridge (295).

Baseball

East Valley 15-8, Quincy 1-3

YAKIMA - The Red Devils swept the visiting Jackrabbits in a Saturday doubleheader between Central Washington Athletic Conference rivals, getting a big performance from star Kevin Komstadius in the process.

Komstadius was 3 for 3 with a pair of home runs and three runs batted in as East Valley invoked the mercy rule after five innings in game one. He also starred on the mound, striking out seven while allowing only three hits.

East Valley used a seven-run first in the nightcap to gain immediate control. Kevin Elkins was 3 for 3 with an RBI for the Devils in game two.

The Jacks return to their home diamond on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. start against Othello.

Ephrata 9-0, Selah 3-10

SELAH - In other CWAC action from Saturday, the Tigers and Vikings split a twinbill as Ephrata's Tyler Lesko and Selah's Jake Fife controlled things with their arms.

Lesko went the distance in game one, surrendering only four hits, to get the 9-3 win. The Tigers had a 5-0 lead after three, then put things away with a three-spot in the seventh.

In the nightcap, Fife threw a five-inning no-hitter as Selah earned the split with a 10-0 shellacking. The Vikings scored four times in the first off Ephrata starter Travis Ruffin, then knocked him out during a four-run second. Derek Welton highlighted the Vikings' offensive effort with a three-run homer.

Ephrata is on the road again on Tuesday, heading to Ellensburg for a 4 p.m. start.

Naches Valley 15-24, Royal 0-0

ROYAL CITY - The Knights didn't get past the fifth inning in either game, managing only five combined hits as the powerful Rangers earned a non-conference split on Saturday.

Nate Haile's grand slam propelled the Rangers in game one, as they knocked out Royal starter Connor Paysse in the second inning.

In game two, Jake Stiles had a pair of two-run homers for Naches Valley, which had 17 hits and benefited from five Royal errors.

Boys Soccer

Othello 5, Selah 4

SELAH - The visiting Huskies got four goals from B.J. Guzman, who also assisted on the game-winning goal by Otoniel Gonzales in the 77th minute on Saturday.

Othello had to rally from an early 2-0 deficit as the Vikings scored twice in the first six minutes. Both came off the foot of Johnny Martinez, the first on a penalty kick and the second off an assist by Eddie Flores. Martinez also finished the game with four goals.

Guzman scored in the 35th and 37th minutes to knot the score at halftime, and scored again in the 59th and 73rd minutes, giving the Huskies short-lived leads both times.

Quincy 7, Ellensburg 0

QUINCY - In another Central Washington Athletic Conference contest, the Jackrabbits jumped all over the visiting Bulldogs as Luis Sorto scored three of Quincy's five first-half goals.

Sorto broke the ice in the third minute off a Juan Romaro assist, then had unassisted tallies in the 12th and 13th minutes. Christian Medina scored in the eighth minute from Romaro, and Medina returned the favor on Daniel Guzman's goal in the 39th minute.

The Jacks scored twice more in the first two minutes of the second half, the first from Manuel Hernandez and the second from Oscar Sorto. Quincy goalkeeper Francisco Tafoya made five saves to earn the shutout.

Eastmont 3, Ephrata 0

EPHRATA - The Tigers managed only two shots on goal as the visiting Wildcats walked away with a non-league win on Thursday.

Eastmont's Javier Tovar and Marco Solario scored in the 19th and 21st minutes, respectively, to make it a 2-0 halftime score, and Omar Garcia put the nail in Ephrata's coffin with a tally in the 76th minute. Eastmont goalkeeper Jose Gladin earned the shutout.

Ephrata is back in action on Tuesday at 6 p.m., traveling to Selah to start the Central Washington Athletic Conference season.

Softball

Selah 14-11, Ephrata 0-2

EPHRATA - The Lady Tigers were blown out to open the Central Washington Athletic Conference season on Saturday, as the visiting Vikings compiled 21 hits to sweep the doubleheader.

Ephrata struggled offensively and defensively in the first game, managing only one hit while committing five errors. The Tigers had eight hits in the nightcap, including a 2 for 3 effort from Lea Dilling, but had three more errors.

Selah's Monica Stout pitched a complete-game shutout in the opener and teammate Jamie Alliston followed suit in the second game. Michelle Reeves took the loss for Ephrata in game one as she was knocked out in the third, and Sarah McMartin was the losing pitcher in game two.

The Tigers travel to East Valley this Saturday for an 11 a.m. conference doubleheader.

Othello 17-10, Wapato 0-0

OTHELLO - The Lady Huskies dominated the Wolves in every aspect of a Saturday CWAC twinbill sweep, winning both games in five innings.

Othello's Nina Gonzalez pitched a perfect game in the 17-0 opening win, striking out 14 of the 15 hitters she faced. Gonzalez also led the Huskies' attack, going 3 for 4 with three RBI. Michelle Wheeler and Kylee Mollotte also had homers in game one for Othello.

In the nightcap, Wheeler allowed only one hit to get the win, and went 2 for 3 with a double at the plate. Gonzalez homered, and the Huskies put the game away with a five-spot in the fourth.

Ephrata 12, Brewster 10

BREWSTER - In Thursday's non-league season opener, the Lady Tigers took advantage of 10 Brewster errors, including seven during their eight-run fourth inning.

Ephrata's Chelsie Hubbard was 3 for 4 with three doubles and two runs scored, and Jordan Peters was the winning pitcher for the Tigers.

Boys Tennis

Moses Lake 6, Gonzaga Prep 1

MOSES LAKE - The Chiefs belted the visiting Bullpups in a non-league affair on Friday, sweeping the singles matches behind easy victories for top seeds Ben Nye and Adrian Juarez.

Nye, Moses Lake's No. 1 player, was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Andy Reiner. Juarez bat Nikolas Westfield 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 match. Third-seeded Connor Lange rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Riley Poppy, while fourth-seeded Andy Su fended off Ian Burns 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5).

Moses Lake's top doubles team of David Asfour and Danny Reis were 6-4, 6-4 winners over Greg Morrissey and Malcolm Pascotti. The No. 2 team of Paul Asfour and Derek McMains defeated Ryan Brown and Taylor Delaney 6-0 5-7, 7-5.

The Chiefs' only loss of the day came at No. 3 doubles, where Ethan Hall and Kyle Livington fell 5-7, 2-6 to Jake McEwen and David Yi.

The Chiefs are at home on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. to host the Sunnyside Grizzlies in a non-league match.

Selah 4, Quincy 0

SELAH - Selah's No. 2 single, Kevin Bertelsen, rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jose Amador as the Vikings swept the Jackrabbits in a Central Washington Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday.

Selah's Cody Alliston defeated Blake Van Dyke 6-0, 6-0, in No. 1 singles. In doubles, the Jacks' top team of Skyler Perez and Jonathan Valesquez lost 6-1, 6-1 to Devin Teske and Geoff Hammond, while Quincy's No. 2 team of Javier Gordillo and Michael Garcia fell 6-2, 6-1 to Craig Beard and Joel Freeborn. The No. 3 doubles match was postponed by rain.

Quincy returns home on Tuesday, hosting Ephrata at 4 p.m.

Girls Tennis

Quincy 3, Selah 1

SELAH - The Lady Jackrabbits' doubles teams were dominant as Quincy beat the homestanding Vikings in a CWAC match on Saturday.

At No. 1 doubles, Quincy's Courtney Felder and Kaloni Young defeated Alicia Cikauskas and Tana Wentz 6-0, 6-2. The No. 2 doubles match was postponed by rain, but Quincy's third team of Katie Homer and Becca Boen downed Taurie Thomas and Colby Daniels 6-4, 6-0.

The squads split the two singles matches, with Selah top seed Lauren Casey beating Heidi Thaemert 6-4, 6-2, and Quincy No. 2 Colleen Knodell getting a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Shelby Welch.
