Cigarette causes Moses Lake house fire

MOSES LAKE - A smoldering cigarette led to a house fire at the Peninsula Estates manufactured home park in Moses Lake Saturday night.
A burning cigarette was reportedly left outside on the porch, Moses Lake Assistant Fire Chief Brett Bastian said. It appears the cigarette ignited papers near a can used to hold cigarette butts.
The fire started on the porch and extended to the laundry room, kitchen and attic space of the double-wide manufactured home, he said. Two residents were inside the home when the fire began, Bastian said.
A neighbor, who saw the fire on the porch, notified the occupants, he said. They were able to get out of the house before the fire reached inside the home. There were no injuries.
The entire house received extensive smoke damage and is no longer inhabitable, Bastian said.
The blaze was extinguished after approximately 15 minutes by using more than 500 gallons of water, he said. The fire department remained on the scene for another two hours clearing hot spots and cleaning the area.
Bastian said the two people living in the home have insurance coverage and are currently staying at a local hotel as they make arraignments to find a permanent home.
He said it is unclear if the occupants have full insurance coverage.
