Knights steal series from Pirates in extra innings

MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake Pirates (4-10) opened a three game home stand Thursday night against the Corvallis Knights (9-6) at Larson Playfield.

The first game featured a pitchers duel in which the Pirates defeated the Knights 3-2 in ten innings. Pirate's relief pitcher Kirk Wetmore earned the victory after a strong eight-inning performance by A.J. Morris. Taylor Starr of the Knights drew the loss.

The Pirates scored three runs on six hits and one error, the Knights scored two runs on five hits, and committed two errors.

In the first inning, Ceasar Lopez scored Corvallis error. Lopez singled and scored in the third on a Tyler Heil single.

The Knights scored a run in the fourth, and tied the game in the top of the ninth. The Knights couldn't hold off the Pirates as Moses Lake right fielder Glen Gray scored the winning run on a Brandon Huerta single.

During the second game, the Corvallis scored 11 runs on 17 hits and two errors. The Pirates staved the shut out with a eighth inning run by Dane Yelovich. The Knights defeated the Pirates 11-1.

In the rubber game of the series at Larson Playfield, the Knights won the game, and the series with a 4-3 extra inning win over the Pirates.

Corvallis scored four runs on eight hits and no errors, while the Pirate's managed three runs on five hits and one error.

The Pirates scored two runs in the third inning and left on runner on base. The Pirates added another run in the seventh inning. Corvallis tied the game in the top of the ninth and sent the game to extra innings for the second time during the series.

In the top of the tenth inning, Adam Melker of Corvallis stole third base and scored what would be the game winning run on a sacrifice fly. The Pirates were unable to respond in the final at bat.

The Pirate's next home game is 7:30p.m. July 10,2008 at Larson Playfield.
