Pirates 5, Athletics 1

MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake Pirates continued their winning ways on Thursday as the ended their six game preseason with a win over the Olympia Athletics by a score of 5-1.

The game was scoreless through the first four innings when in the bottom of the fourth the Pirates bats came alive scoring four runs. The game remained static until the bottom of the eighth when Olympia's pitcher hit three batters in a row, giving up a run in the process.

The Athletics scored one in the ninth but it wasn't enough to catch up to the hot-handed Pirates.

Kevin Coddington of West Linn, Ore., left the team yesterday to join the Florida Marlins organization as he was taken in the draft. Pirates owners Brent and Amy Kirwan "wish him the best" with his career.

"It would be great to see all our players go" to the big leagues, Amy said.

Pirates skipper Trevor Brown called the move an "exciting time for him (Coddington)" and said it's always "a hard decision for a kid to make."

The Pirates officially kick off their regular season tonight with a three game home stand against the Spokane Riverhawks at Larson Playfield at 7:30 p.m.
