Carniceria owner working for kids' education

Alanis hopes to expand, add space

MOSES LAKE - Miguel Alanis is working hard for his children.

Son Michael, nearly 22, is working to be a doctor at Stanford University. Daughter Anel, 18, is studying to be a lawyer at the University of Washington.

That's why Alanis opened Carniceria Guerrero, at 200 W. Broadway Ave., in Moses Lake, in December.

"I'm here because I have two kids and when I talk to my kids, I tell them life is very hard and so you need (to be) working hard," Alanis explained. "I'm not working hard, my kids (are) not working hard, you know?"

He had been living and working in Sunnyside in a similar business, which wasn't doing too well, until a friend told him there were a lot of Mexican businesses and much call for Mexican food in Moses Lake.

Alanis has lived in town for about seven months.

Since opening, Alanis said business has been "so-so." He would like more customers, and said business is keeping pretty steady.

He employs two family members in the business for the moment.

Since he is currently renting space, Alanis hopes to eventually be able to find his own space in Moses Lake.

"Right now my business is only fresh meat and food," he said.

Alanis would like to add groceries and more food. He has two years of experience working in a restaurant, he noted.

"I was working for somebody else in the restaurant," he explained, noting he wanted to work for himself, which is the reason he opened the store in Sunnyside.

Carniceria Guerrero is open 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and closes at 7 p.m. Sunday.
