EPHRATA - The Columbia Basin Desert Dogs fell in a hole early Wednesday night and could not dig themselves out against the Port Angeles Wilders in the opening round of the state Babe Ruth tournament.

Port Angeles scored four runs in the first inning to fend off the Desert Dogs for an 8-1 victory.

Port Angeles starting pitcher Josh Orr dominated the Desert Dogs, holding the Columbia Basin team to one run on two hits.

Desert Dog head coach Denny Oughton said Orr was the best pitcher his team has faced.

"That's the best guy we've seen all year," he told his team following Wednesday night's loss.

The Desert Dog offense never got momentum, Oughton said.

"We made a couple of mistakes," he said. "We never really got going tonight."

Oughton told his team to focus on tonight's game against the Tacoma Tides.

"Let this game go," he said. "We have to come out tomorrow and play our game."

The Desert Dogs play at 5 p.m. tonight at Ephrata High School.
