ROYAL CITY - Royal City Summerfest brings together sports, food, games and entertainment Friday through Sunday.

The event opens tonight with a soccer championship at 5 p.m. in the Royal City Lions Field park off Camelia Street. A barbecue starts at 6 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m.

The cost is $2.50 for a hot dog plate, and $3.50 for a barbecue burger plate. Those who purchase their food before the event can win a vacation at the Mar Don Resort, a cooler chest or camping equipment, said event chair Leslie Fanning.

Local entertainment begins at 6:30 p.m. The band Life on Mars performs from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The company which was originally putting on the fireworks show canceled, but a new company might be putting on the show, Fanning said. A contract for the show had not yet been signed.

"I think they're going to come to fruition," she said.

Saturday

Saturday brings more fun, with a free breakfast, Run for President-2008 FunRun, a pie-eating contest, parade and plenty of other events.

The grand marshall of the 10 a.m. Grand Parade is Crab Creek Tacklers, Fanning said.

"They are a service club that has been here 75 years," she said.

Some of the approximately 10 women in the group are second-generation members, Fanning added.

New events include a Ballet Folklorico Mexico Lindo exhibition, an AIM Gymnastic exhibition, a free U.S. Army climbing wall, and a water balloon fight put on by a Boy Scout troop. Other new events are a batting cage and Mariachi in the Park.

Clown Antics is returning this year for a second performance.

"We invited them back because we liked them so much," Fanning said.

Sunday

On Sunday is a Summerfest Scramble at 9 a.m., at Royal City Public Golf Course. More information on the event is available at www.royalcitygolf.com.

At 10 a.m. there is a motorcycle rally organized by K.C. Pratt.

Those who wish to ride should meet at Spud's Conoco, located off highway 26 at the entrance to Royal City, Pratt said. The loop is about 200 miles round trip, but participants can turn around at any time.

On Saturday, motorcycle riders can join Pratt in the parade by meeting at 9 a.m. at Royal Middle School, 911 Ahlers Road S.W.

Fanning wanted to acknowledge the work of Friday's chair Heather Jenks, Saturday's chair Karen Lasen, booth chair Mandy Nelson and parade chair Chris Mianecki.
