Prep basketball recaps

WARDEN - The Warden Lady Cougars played some clutch basketball on Wednesday, scoring 23 of the final 32 points to upset the Kiona-Benton Bears in a South Central Athletic Conference East Division contest.

"We put a little pressure on them in the fourth quarter," Cougars head coach Todd Kisler said. "They started fouling us, and we were able to make our free throws."

Warden (4-13 overall, 2-7 league) shot 17 free throws in the fourth quarter, and made 17 of 28 for the game. The Cougars trailed 34-29 after three quarters, but owned the Bears (6-11, 4-4) down the stretch.

Cougar senior guard Kelsey Garner led all scorers with 21 points. Kaitlyn Yamane scored eight points and Kim McPartland added seven. Cassandra Kisler finished with seven points, 10 rebounds and four assists, while Kacey Kisler had six points and nine boards.

Caitlin Patterson paced Kiona-Benton with 16 points.

Othello 72, Selah 65

SELAH - An outstanding performance from the conference's leading scorer wasn't quite enough to knock the Lady Huskies off track on Tuesday.

Othello improved to 13-2 overall, 11-2 in Central Washington Athletic Conference play, rallying from an early deficit to knock off the Vikings.

Selah's Sasha Valdez, the CWAC's leading scorer, paced all scorers with 26 points. Teammates Rochelle Burke (11 points, eight assists) and Emily Harris (10 points, 11 rebounds) also contributed, but Othello's big three did more damage.

Courtney Kirkwood had 23 points for Othello, with Allison Walker going for 19 points and Christine Kirkwood adding 11. The Huskies did get a better fight from the Vikings this time around - Othello beat them in December by 26.

Othello is only a half-game back of first-place Ellensburg entering Saturday's 6 p.m. home date with Quincy.

Walla Walla 53, Moses Lake 38

WALLA WALLA - The Chiefs were the Columbia Basin League's only undefeated team entering Tuesday, and they'd knocked off the Blue Devils by 20 points just four nights earlier.

But Moses Lake committed 19 turnovers and shot just 1 of 12 from 3-point range, allowing Walla Walla to breeze to a 39-18 halftime lead and drop the Chiefs' record to 12-4 overall, 7-1 in league.

The twin towers of Ann Noyes and Carly Noyes had strong games for Moses Lake, with senior Ann shooting 8 of 12 from the floor for 16 points and junior Carly adding 14 points on 5 of 7 from the field.

But the Blue Devils completely disrupted Moses Lake's backcourt, which was very successful in Friday's 58-38 win. The Chiefs' starting guards, Jordan Loera, Lorin Montgomery and Kelly Sutherland, were only 3 of 21 from the floor for a combined eight points. Loera was scoreless, taking only three shots.

Meanwhile, the Blue Devils were red-hot during the first half, shooting 62 percent from the field, including 7 of 12 on 3-pointers. Jennifer Keyes, who had a game-high 21 points last Friday, scored 18 this time around to lead Walla Walla, and Mikaela Rivard chipped in 13 points.

The Chiefs will try to bounce back on Friday at Eisenhower, a 7:30 p.m. start. Moses Lake now trails Pasco (15-2, 8-1) by a half-game, though the teams will meet again in Moses Lake next Thursday.

Sunnyside Christian 49, Moses Lake Christian 31

Jason Friend paced the Knights with 17 points and six rebounds, and Joel Koopmans added 10 points.
