Naoki Kamiya

| January 24, 2008 8:00 PM

Naoki Kamiya was born on Feb. 8, 1959, in Tokyo, Japan to parents Kunio and Akiko, and brother Shigeki who was six years his senior. He spent most of his childhood years living in Tokyo with a short time spent living in Rome around age 5. His father was a commercial 747 pilot for Japan Airlines and they moved to Moses Lake for two years when Naoki was 14 so his father could train other pilots at the air base there. When his parents decided to return to Japan, Naoki (age 16) wanted to stay in the United States to complete high school and he graduated from Moses Lake High School in 1977. Naoki went on to pursue both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Electrical Engineering at Washington State University in Pullman, Wash., and graduated in May 1984. It was in an undergraduate class in Circuits that he was a teaching assistant for a young, lovely undergrad named Flo Hausler. (Flo bashfully admits that she got an A in that class, but Naoki told her they could not date until the class ended.) The rest is magic …

After grad school Naoki moved to Oregon for a job with the Intel Corporation and worked there for close to 10 years as Flo finished her degree at WSU. She graduated in 1985 and joined him in Portland. Their daughter, Cally, was born in 1990 followed by daughter Megan in 1993. Naoki and Flo built a house in 1992 in Tigard, Ore., where they still reside today. Naoki chose to leave Intel in 1994 to work for nCube in Beaverton, Ore., where the workday was much less stressful and he could spend more quality time with his family. He continued with nCube until 2001 and did contract work afterward so he could be a stay-at-home dad for the girls. Soon after, Naoki decided to become a citizen of the United States and then in 2002 Flo and Naoki were married.

On the evening of Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, Naoki (who had been complaining of headaches in recent days) spent a great evening bowling with a group of good friends and came home to his family. Around 9:30 p.m. he suffered a massive brain bleed and subsequently passed away early on the morning of Jan. 8. Flo, Cally, Megan, their exchange student, Isis, and several neighbors were with him when he passed.

A gathering was held Sunday, Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. in the clubhouse of the Meriwether Golf Club in Hillsboro for Naoki and was filled to capacity with friends and family.

His kind, loving spirit will be missed by all he touched.
