Late surge pushes Ephrata wrestlers past Prosser

EPHRATA - Ephrata's wrestlers took the final five weights on Tuesday night, rallying themselves to a 43-33 victory over the Prosser Mustangs in a Central Washington Athletic Conference dual meet.

Prosser led 33-18 before the Tigers' 112-pounder, Anthony Bush, began the comeback with a 28-second pin of Devin Dimas. Ephrata's Brenton Beard (119) knocked off Ethan Groom 7-1, and Preston Hendrickson (125) followed with a pin of Elizar Munoz at 3 minutes, 25 seconds, tying the match at 33-all.

Kurt Nygard (130) gave Ephrata a 37-33 lead with a 13-4 major decision against Marvin Sandoval, and Tyson Hubbard (135) pinned Leanal Solorzano at 1:32 for the final margin.

Ephrata's 140-pounder, Quinton Hendrickson, began the evening with a 63-second pin of Tyler Trumble. Prosser's David Huizar (145) pinned Ryan Cross at 2:24, and teammate Rene Moreno (152) edged Chris Davidson 9-8, giving the Mustangs a 9-6 lead.

Ephrata's Robert Motzkus (160) put the Tigers up again by pinning Taylor Ledgerwood at 3:22, but Prosser won four of the next five bouts to take charge.

Prosser's Ivan Barbosa (189) began the streak with a pin of Curtis Treiber at 4:13. Seth Warren (215) pinned Deion Ducksworth at 5:20, and Irving Jaimez (103) pinned Seth Kulakoski at 5:27.

Ephrata's only win during that stretch came from 285-pounder Anthony Johnson, who won by forfeit.

The Tigers wrestle again tonight at 7 p.m, traveling to East Valley for another CWAC dual.

Boys swimming

Moses Lake 119, Eisenhower 60

MOSES LAKE - The Chiefs earned victories in seven events on Tuesday, leading to a Columbia Basin League triumph over the Cadets.

Marshall Goodrich won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 52.84 seconds, nearly 11 seconds better than his nearest competitor. Teammate Chandler Byington was third in the event (2:11.21).

Reuben Huddleston took first in the 200-yard individual medley, edging Eisenhower's Shea Hurley with a time of 2:21.35. Moses Lake's Austin Massart was third in the event (2:25.63).

The Chiefs swept the top three spots in the 1-meter dive. Chad Borg scored 151.40 points for first, followed by Carl Borg (146.65) and Jay Bowser (135.25).

In the 500-yard freestyle, Kyle Reeder led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Chiefs, winning in 5:46.87. Huddleston was second (5:52.69) and Byington third (5:52.77).

Moses Lake swept all 12 team points in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Eric Butterfield, Nick Kardong, Goodrich and Jeremy Grant won in 1:35.56. George Olson, Christopher Jackson, Tyler Milligan and Patrick Doremus were second in 1:51.69.

Massart was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.88), while the 400-yard freestyle team of Butterfield, Kardong, Grant and Goodrich was first in 3:29.93.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Grant, Butterfield, Goodrich and Kardong finished second in 1:48.24, about four seconds off the pace of Eisenhower's winning time.

Other second-place efforts from Moses Lake included Dylan Grigg in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.78) and 100-yard backstroke (1:06.22), and Kardong in the 100-yard freestyle (54.67).

The Chiefs send their divers to a meet in Ellensburg on Friday at 3 p.m., and the whole team travels to Whitman College on Saturday to face Walla Walla at 11 a.m.

Girls basketball

Mansfield 50, Wilson Creek 30

WILSON CREEK - The Lady Devils were beaten by the visiting Kernels in a North Central League 1B contest on Tuesday night.

Wilson Creek's Ksenja Fredere had a double-double in the loss, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kelsey Campbell scored seven and Jackie Treat added six. Holly Wilson grabbed nine rebounds and Tiffany Friend dished out six assists.

The Lady Devils finish up a three-game road trip to begin league play on Friday, playing Entiat at 6 p.m.
