Othello squeezes by Selah for wrestling win

SELAH - Jake Smith's first-period pin of Nikko Rodriguez in the 112-pound match propelled the visiting Othello Huskies to a 32-30 victory over the Selah Vikings on Tuesday in a Central Washington Athletic Conference wrestling match.
Smith needed a technical fall or a pin to put the Huskies on top, and got the pin at 1 minute, 38 seconds. That came one match after Selah's Levi Needles put the Vikings ahead 30-26 with a 30-second pin of Pepe Lozano at 103 pounds.
The evening began with Othello's 119-pounder, Matt Jordan, beating Demy Anaya 6-3. At 130, Othello's Reuben Lopez got a 17-7 major decision over Josh Cruz, and 140-pounder Amando DeLeon also earned four team points with a 12-4 defeat of Ty Noble.
The Huskies' other victories included Tyson Alvarez (152), a 3-0 winner over Tyler Perkins; Kevin Smith (160), an 8-5 winner over Willie Hayes; Jusdin Lynch (189), who pinned Zach Bales at 4:48; and Michael Carmona (285), a 6-2 victor over Brock Huffman.
Selah's other wins came from Robert Espinoza (125), an 11-1 winner over Anthony Melo; Carlos Torres (135), a 10-0 winner over Chris Gifford; Chris Rowe (145), who beat Daniel Walker 14-2; Ryan Depaz (171), a winner by pin at 3:38 against Stevie Garza; and Dan Escamilla (215), a 31-second winner by pin against Eddie Morales.
The Huskies host the Quincy Jackrabbits tonight at 7 p.m. in what shapes up to be a key CWAC dual.
Boys basketball
Connell 52, Othello 48
OTHELLO - In a battle of former conference rivals, the visiting Eagles overcame an early deficit to beat the Huskies on Tuesday.
Connell's Aaron Hawkins led all scorers with 14 points and teammate Spencer Hadley added 11. The Eagles shot 17 of 35 from the floor (49 percent) and made six more free throws than Othello.
Miles Gardner was the only Huskie in double figures with 10 points. Jakob Scott had eight points and 12 rebounds, but Othello shot just 10 of 21 at the charity stripe.
The Huskies travel to Wapato for a CWAC meeting on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Royal 44, Warden 39
WARDEN - The Knights earned their first South Central Athletic Conference East Division win of the year on Tuesday, despite being held to six points in the fourth quarter.
Marc Albertson and Michael Hebdon scored 12 points each for Royal, Blair Collins scored 11 and Colt Brown added nine. Warden's Kevin Whitaker led all scorers with 15 points, but leading scorer Ben Bisnett was limited to seven.
The Cougars led 22-21 at halftime before a 17-8 Royal run in the third quarter put them out front to stay.
Warden plays at Kiona-Benton on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and Royal is home the same night to play Wahluke, also at 7:30 p.m.
Girls basketball
Othello 62, Connell 60 (OT)
OTHELLO - The Lady Huskies bounced back from an 11-point halftime deficit on Tuesday, eventually beating the visiting Eagles when Kylee Mollotte rebounded Allison Walker's missed free throw and scored with six seconds left in overtime.
Othello's Courtney Kirkwood was one of three Huskies in double figures, leading all scorers with 19 points. Walker added 15 and Christine Kirkwood had 13. Connell's Kortneigh Eppich had 17 points.
Othello trailed 23-15 after one quarter and 35-24 at halftime, but trimmed the deficit to 48-41 after three and sent the game to overtime with a 14-7 surge in the fourth.
The Huskies travel to Wapato on Friday for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
