MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake City Council held an election to appoint councilmembers to the mayor and deputy mayor positions Tuesday night.

Mayor Ron Covey and Deputy Mayor Richard Pearce maintained their positions.

Councilmember Jon Lane motioned to re-elect Covey to the mayor's seat and Council-member Brent Reese seconded.

The motion was approved unanimously.

During the meeting Covey made a pledge to citizens to continue working to make Moses Lake a better place to live and raise families.

Councilmember Jim Liebrecht voted to nominate Councilmember Bill Ecret to the deputy mayor position.

Councilmember Dick Deane voted to nominate Pearce to the deputy mayor position.

No other nominations were made and council voted through a show of hands.

Liebrecht was the single vote for Ecret while all other councilmembers, including Ecret, voted Pearce back to the position.

Pearce said he will continue to help the mayor and manage the council meetings in his absence.

All councilmembers are elected to the council by citizens but the mayor and deputy mayor are not elected by citizens. Councilmembers are appointed to the position by each other.
