McCain Foods looks at Moses Lake

Site decision expected in March

MOSES LAKE - A food production company is eyeing Moses Lake, Grant County Economic Development Council Executive Director Terry Brewer confirmed.

McCain Foods is still evaluating sites, Brewer said via e-mail, but he is anticipating a probable site decision by the end of March.

In December, McCain Foods Limited announced its intent to invest $150 million Canadian for the construction of a new plant in the Pacific Northwest. The facility will be designed to produce French fries and potato specialties primarily for food service and quick service restaurant customers in the United States and international markets.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2008 pending final approvals. Startup of the facility is anticipated for late summer 2009.

McCain Foods Counsel and Director of Government Relations Ian Mitchell said no location has been determined.

If Moses Lake is selected, Brewer said it would mean about 250 more jobs and more demand for potatoes.
