Offensive drought spells season's end for Royal girls basketball

COWICHE - It was a short-lived postseason journey for the Royal Lady Knights, who lost a 60-38 decision on Saturday to the Highland Scots in a South Central Athletic Conference district crossover playoff game.

Royal, the East Division's fifth seed, started slowly against West No. 4 Highland, which built a 21-10 lead after one quarter and a 37-17 edge at halftime. The Scots got 21 points and eight rebounds from Kate Urquhart, and 15 points and nine assists from Lindsey Adams, to move into the double-elimination round at East No. 1 Connell on Thursday.

Royal's Tawnee Gonzales had 14 points and Page Woodward added 11 points. The Lady Knights finished the season 9-11 overall.

Othello 69, Wapato 32

OTHELLO - Make it 15 wins in a row for the Lady Huskies, who got big games from their three big scorers to trounce the Wolves in Central Washington Athletic Conference action.

Othello got 25 points from Allison Walker, 16 from Christine Kirkwood and 13 from Courtney Kirkwood, turning a modest 26-17 halftime lead into a rout with 43 second-half points. The Huskies had 42 free-throw attempts to Wapato's six.

Othello (17-2 overall, 14-2 CWAC) travels to Toppenish on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Lind-Ritzville 45, Liberty 33

SPOKANE - The Lady Broncos will play for the No. 3 seed to regionals on Tuesday after using a strong first half to beat the Lancers in a Northeast 2B district playoff game.

Trailing 10-6 after one quarter, Lind-Ritzville (18-4 overall) went on a 16-3 run before the half and extended their lead in the third quarter. Katlin Fowles led all scorers with 16 points, Laura Cain added 10 and Devon Killian chipped in eight.

The Lady Broncos play at Spokane Community College on Tuesday against Springdale, a 6:30 p.m. tip-off. The winner gets the third seed to regionals and the loser is fourth.

Ellensburg 79, Quincy 28

ELLENSBURG - The Lady Jackrabbits found no way of containing Bulldogs star Kayla Standish, who went off for 30 points, 16 rebounds, eight blocked shots and four steals in Ellensburg's CWAC victory.

Ellensburg, the CWAC co-leader along with Othello, kept Quincy (5-13 overall, 5-11 CWAC) to 15 points through three quarters. The Bulldogs took over in the second half, scoring 51 points, an outburst that followed 16 consecutive points in the second period. Ellensburg did its damage from outside, hitting 13 shots from 3-point land.

Tashia Zamarron led the Lady Jacks with nine points - half of her average - while Colleen Knodell chipped in seven. Quincy leads Grandview by one game for the league's eighth and final playoff spot going into Tuesday's 6 p.m. home game with Selah.
