Warden knocks off SCAC foes
WARDEN —?The Warden Cougars boys basketball team entered the holiday break last weekend with a pair of South Central Athletic Conference (SCAC) victories to begin league play.
The Cougars improved to 1-0 in SCAC competition following a 47-30 road win over the Kiona-Benton Bears Friday night.
Although his team came away with the victory, Warden head coach Wes Richens said his team is improving.
“We are a work in progress,” he said.
Freshman Ty Jesse led Warden in scoring Friday night and Richens said Jesse performed well.
“It was a good break-out game for him,” he said. “He has tons of potential.”
The Warden Cougars basketball remained undefeated in conference play and moved to 2-0 following its 44-42 home victory over the Columbia-Burbank Coyotes at Warden High School.
Richens said his Cougars played their best game of the season against a tough Coyotes team.
“We played really well,” he said. “It was probably the most complete game we’ve played against a good opponent.”
Nathan Brown led the Cougars in scoring in the win over the Coyotes with 21 points and Richens said Brown led Warden in the fourth quarter.
“He had a couple of huge plays down the stretch to help us secure the win,” he said.
Eric Bates had seven rebounds and four blocks while Geo Flores added four assists.
Warden head coach Wes Richens said his team has played well going into the holiday break going undefeated in SCAC play.
“It’s good to go into Christmas break with a little bit of momentum,” he said. “We haven’t been in this position in a long time.”
Richens said he hopes his team can maintain their momentum through the remainder of its SCAC season.
“We will continue to improve and hopefully we can make a run to a league title,” he said.
Connell 55, Royal 39
CONNELL — The Royal Knights boys basketball team couldn’t overcome 28 points from Connell’s Lance Whitney as the Knights fell in their SCAC season opener 55-39.
Royal senior Blair Collins scored 15 points in the loss. Senior Jace Christensen scored seven points and junior Marc Albertson finished with seven points and seven rebounds.
Othello 65, Toppenish 58
TOPPENISH — The Othello Huskies knocked off Central Washington Athletic Conference rival Toppenish thanks to 23 points from Judah Gowan.
Gowan made four 3-point baskets and the Huskies finished 7-of-11 from behind the 3-point line to knock off Toppenish.
Othello senior Jakob Scott finished the night with a double-double, recording 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Prosser, Quincy 43
PROSSER —?The Jacks boys basketball team couldn’t take advantage of 10 points from both Eric Martin and Cory Keller as Prosser held on to knock of Quincy for the Central Washington Athletic Conference victory.
Martin and Keller led the Jacks in scoring and Adam Richardson grabbed seven rebounds and scored seven points.
