Moses Lake schools buy grammar books

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake school board approved a textbook purchase of about $50,000 Thursday.

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction Michelle Price said it is the first time the district purchased a text book between cycles to fix a gap in instruction.

The book is called “Elements of Language” and focuses on grammar.

“Looking at our data of our students, we can see that we had an area that we weren’t addressing,” Price said.

The textbook purchase was approved as part of new classes at Moses Lake High School.

Moses Lake High School Assistant Principal Josh Meek spoke in support of the purchase.

“Grammar is not one of those topics that is popular,” Meek said. “In the teaching of language arts, grammar is one of those things that has kind of fallen off to the side.”

Price said the books won’t constitute another textbooks for students to carry around, as sets are being purchased for classroom use.
