Sabey buys land in Quincy

QUINCY — The Seattle-based Sabey Corporation is moving ahead with its plan to build a data center near Quincy with a roughly $1.5 million land purchase.

Sabey bought the 39.02 acres of land from the Port of Quincy, port Commissioner Patric Connelly confirmed Thursday.

“We’re excited about owningthe property and excited about opportunities out in the area,” said John Ford, Sabey’s technology real estate director.

It wasn’t yet clear how many jobs would be created with the center as the company doesn’t know what it’s final plans will be, Ford explained.

But he said there will be a heavy construction phase during the building like the other area facilities experienced.

Microsoft, Yahoo! and Intuit also built data centers near Quincy.

Sabey is building two data centers near the Pangborn Memorial Airport in East Wenatchee, Wash., Connelly said.

Connelly said he thinks the port started talking to Sabey in the spring of 2007.

Sabey wanted to see how plans turned out for a wastewater recycling facility and part of the industrial park needed replatted, Connelly said.

A groundbreaking for a water recycling facility was held in August and Phase 1 of the project is expected to be done in 2009.

The facility is intended to keep servers cool and will be state’s first use of municipal recycled wastewater in industrial cooling towers.

Pat Boss, public affairs consultant for the port, said Quincy is blessed with redundancy and several dark fiber providers in Quincy.

Dark fiber is a piece of fiber where customers put electronics at both ends. Some companies prefer dark fiber for low cost and security issues.

The dark fiber makes a difference when working to bring high-tech economic development to the area, he noted

“It’s great news and obviously, Quincy is very happy with their purchase of the property,” Boss said.
