MOSES LAKE — Big Bend Community College will host the Basic American Foods Viking Classic basketball tournament this weekend at the DeVries Activity Center on the Big Bend campus.

Big Bend Athletic Director and women’s head coach Preston Wilks said the tournament will provide the community an opportunity to support local athletics.

“This is the best opportunity for fans to come out in a tournament setting,” he said. “(This tournament) contributes to the community. Hopefully the community will come out and take a look at our teams.”

The tournament begins Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. when Walla Walla Community College will face off with Blue Mountain Community College. The Lady Vikings will take to the court at 5:45 p.m. when they face the Clark College Penguins.

Wilks said the Big Bend athletes are excited for the opportunity to host a basketball tournament at home.

“Our players are excited to show they are one of the best teams out there,” he said. “Hopefully we can put some points on the board, entertain our fans and get them hooked (on Big Bend basketball).”

The Big Bend Vikings men’s basketball team will play on their home court Friday night when they take on Northwest Indian College at 7:30 p.m.

Wilks said the tournament is a chance for the Big Bend teams to showcase their talents in front of large audiences.

“This is an opportunity for the Big Bend teams to play in a tournament setting with a bigger fan-base,” he said. We have two playoff-caliber teams this year. We want to get some pride back in the basketball programs.”

Admission to this weekend’s tournament games is $5 per adult, $4 for children ages 7 to 18 and children 6 and younger will be admitted free.
