Moses Lake 74, Southridge 0

KENNEWICK - The Moses Lake Chiefs wrestling team was perfect Thursday night as they rolled to a 74-0 victory over Columbia Basin Big Nine conference foe Southridge.

The Chiefs earned victories in all 14 weight classes, including six by pin, to earn the Big Nine victory and start the season 1-0.

Moses Lake head coach Jamie Wise said he was impressed by his team's performance.

"It was a good start to the year," he said. "We didn't lose a match tonight. We came out and blanked them on varsity."

Moses Lake's domination began in the junior varsity matches and rolled through to the varsity matches. The Chiefs won all 11 JV matches by pin.

Wise said his team maintained their focus throughout the match to shutout Southridge.

"You could see there was a lot more determination," he said. "One thing I liked to see was that the next kid who came out didn't want to disappoint - that is the key. The intensity carried throughout."

The Chiefs won the first match of the night when Jordan Bishop won by forfeit as Moses Lake raced out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back.

Moses Lake won four matches Thursday night by forfeit.

Following his team's victory, Wise said he can't wait for his team's first tournament of the season.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing them in a big tournament now," he said. "We need to know where we stack up with those guys."

Wise said he was proud to see his team out-wrestle the Suns.

"We out conditioned them," he said. "We stayed in better position."

Although his team came away with the Big Nine victory, Wise said he knew neither his team nor Southridge was at full strength.

"I know (Southridge was) not at full strength," he said. "I don't know if we are either."

While Wise said his entire team performed well, he was particularly impressed with Derrick Johnson.

"Derek is at 130," he said. "He is heavier than he was last year and he wrestled great tonight."

Moses Lake continues the season Saturday when they travel to Kennewick for the Bob Mars Invitational tournament.
