Pat R. Shafer

Pat R. Shafer, 88, a 57-year resident of Moses Lake, passed away Nov. 28, 2008, at Monroe House, where he has resided since June of 2007.

Graveside services and interment will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday at Canyon Hills Cemetery in Caldwell, Idaho. Viewing will be at Kayser's Chapel from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. Pat was born Jan. 13, 1920, in Caldwell, Idaho, to Eleanor Friedrich Shafer and John A. Shafer. He served in the military in WWII, joining the Army Nov. 18, 1940. Pat served in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was with the 183rd Field Artillery Group. He was honorably discharged Oct. 28, 1945, at Fort Douglas, Utah. In 1951,t he married Ivora M. Jones in Weiser, Idaho, and moved to Moses Lake that same year working for Terteling Construction.

Pat was an excellent craftsman, building many houses in Moses Lake. He also built overpasses and bridges in Washington state during his employment with North Central Construction, Swenson Construction and Snitley Brothers. Pat was a member of the Carpenter's Union 1849, BPOE #1724, American Legion and the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his brother, Bill Shafer of Boise, Idaho; sister, Pauline "Betty" John of Clinton, Utah; nephew, Jim Lynch of Palm Desert, Calif.; step-daughter, Vicki Groff, Moses Lake; grandson, Eric Groff and June, Moses Lake; great-grandchildren, Natasha and Quinten Groff, Moses Lake; sisters-in-law, Jeannine Hogge and Mary Jones, Nampa, Idaho; brother-in-law, Gayle Jones, Greensboro, Ga.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eleanor; his wife, Ivora; sisters, Lucille Lynch and Hazel Barningham; and brother Chuck Shafer.
