MILL CREEK, Wash. — Ephrata’s Andrew Whalen shot 13-over-par during the qualifying round of the 54th Pacific Northwest Golf Association Junior Boys’ Amateur Championship at the Mill Creek Country Club.

Whalen’s qualifying round score of 157 put him four strokes behind the cut to qualify for the match-play championship tournament. Whalen finished 45th out of 137 participants.

The two-day event consisted of a 36-hole, stroke play qualifying round to determine flights for the match play championship.

After the stroke round completed, the lowest 32 scores from the qualifying round advanced to the championship flights.

Each flight included eight contestants and was an 18-hole, single elimination tournament.

Flights are established according to the handicaps of each participant prior to the championship event.

Alex Mroz of Woodenville won the qualifying round of the qualifying event with a seven-under-par 137 for 36 holes.

Mroz was the tournament's top seed heading into today's match play round.
