Pirates split doubleheader
Moses Lake wins one, loses one against Kelowna
KELOWNA, B.C. - The Moses Lake Pirates split a doubleheader with the Kelowna Falcons Sunday to wrap up the 2008 West Coast Collegiate Baseball league season. The Pirates finished the season with a 13-29 record.
Moses Lake won the first game of Sunday's doubleheader 1-0.
The Pirates scored their only run in the third inning when center fielder Dane Yelovich singled to left field and moved on to third base following an error by Kelowna left fielder Wande Olabisi.
Yelovich scored when Moses Lake third baseman Brandon Huerta grounded out to first base.
The run was the only score starting pitcher Mike McCarthy would need to secure the Moses Lake victory. McCarthy threw seven innings and surrendered four Falcons hits to earn his fourth victory for the Pirates.
The Pirates could not hold the momentum they gained in the first game as the Falcons defeated Moses Lake 4-2 in the second game to earn a trip to the 2008 WCCBL Divisional Playoffs.
After a scoreless first inning, the Falcons scored one run in the second and another in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Pirates.
Kelowna scored two additional runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-0 lead over Moses Lake.
The Pirates cut the Kelowna lead to 4-1 in the seventh inning.
First baseman Brock Gates singled up the middle to lead off the inning. Gates advanced to second when right fielder Philip Parrish singled to right field. Gates would score when designated hitter D.C. Legg doubled down the left field line.
Moses Lake scored again in the eighth inning after center fielder Dane Yelovich walked to lead off the inning for the Pirates.
Yelovich moved to second when left fielder Glenn Gray singled to left field. Yelovich stole third base and scored when Parrish grounded out to shortstop.
The run cut the Moses Lake deficit in half at 4-2, but the Falcons held off the Pirates in the ninth to clinch second place in the WCCBL East Division.
The 4-2 loss ended the Pirates' season.
