Team wins eight straight to take title

SPOKANE — The Dream On volleyball team walked away from the 2008 Spike and Dig coed volleyball tournament as champions.

The Dream On team won eight consecutive tournament games en route to the A Division championship, and an 8-0 finish.

The annual tournament held at Spokane Falls Community College is one of the largest outdoor tournaments in the northwest, Dream On participant Cindy Nielsen said.

The Dream On team has won the event in the past, but the championship has never felt like it did on Sunday, Nielsen said.

“It felt awesome to win,” she said. “We always expect to win but you never know how the ball will fall. We had a pretty good shot.”

The A division is the most difficult division, with the most experienced players, Nielsen said.

Nielsen said the tournament requires each team to play four males and two females at all times.

While Dream On dominated the tournament with the help of brothers Elijah, Moses and David Timofeyev, Nielsen credited the victory to the experience of Bill Stevens and Dean Spurbeck.

“They are the old, wiley ones,” she said. “They are the ones who taught the boys how to play.”

Nielsen said Dream On was mentally prepared to win the championship.

“It was fun to play a smart game,” she said. “You have to play mentally and physically well. And we had great fans there.”

The Dream On team included Moses Lake residents Cindy Nielsen, Dean Spurbeck, and Elijah, Moses, and David Timofeyev. Soap Lake resident Bill Stevens and Amy Heron of Spokane also competed for Dream On.
