Kindergarten students register in Moses Lake
Larson Heights educates on dairy
MOSES LAKE - Larson Heights Elementary School welcomed its newest scholars with ice cream and dairy education.
Students entering kindergarten in the Moses Lake School District registered for school Thursday.
At Larson Heights, future kindergarten students had the chance to make butter, learn some facts about dairy food, and try their hand at "milking a cow" - squirting water out of a glove into a bowl.
"It's wonderful to see so many families and so many smiling faces here," said Principal Eric Johnson.
Johnson said he hoped to see at least 65 to 75 kindergarten students at the school, filling four sections in the fall.
Teacher Debbie Sackmann said the school's kindergarten teachers organized the event. Last year, entering kindergarten students were treated to a petting zoo.
Sackmann said when she asked her students where milk came from, they named a store. Then she asked them where the store got milk.
"Not one of them knew, and it was kind of like, 'Oh my gosh, I've got to do something,'" Sackmann said.
In addition to learning about dairy, students and parents learned about special programs available to students through Title 1. Students visiting the table could win books and pencils as part of a drawing, said Title 1 teacher Karen Johnson.
"Any time we can get parents in, we love to give them information about our school and what we're doing and how we can best help children," Johnson said.
