Club hopes to install this year

SOAP LAKE - The Soap Lake Garden Club still needs funds to place a six-ton art sculpture at East Beach Park.

The $150,000 healing waters theme sculpture was purchased last year by the garden club through nearly 13 years of obtaining grants, donations, conducting yard sales and selling plants.

The bronze sculpture called "Calling the Healing Waters," features a man and a woman sitting on a rock. The woman is holding a bowl allowing water to seep through the bottom. The man has cast iron wings spread across his back with his hand extended toward the sky.

The sculpture is part of a sundial design. It will be surrounded by several decorative rocks to depict the time using the sun. A sidewalk will lead to the sundial and it's to be surrounded by benches. Several memorial stones will be placed at the site.

Club President Stella Easton said the garden club is in need of approximately $100,000 to purchase materials to place the sculpture at the park and to pay for labor for installation.

The sculpture was expected to be erected last summer but there were several city permits the garden club needed to obtain in addition to funding before the project could continue. She said all the proper permitting is obtained and they are ready to install once they get the proper funding.

"We're working as hard as we can to get it this year," Easton said.

To donate to the garden club for the completion of the structure, people can contact Easton at 509-246-0104 or Club Treasurer Dorothy Downing at 509-246-1685 or send a check to P.O. Box 67 in Soap Lake.

Easton said several memorial stones are for sale for $125 each. The stones will be placed at the site and can feature up to 40 engraved letters. Approximately 200 stones are sold.

To purchase a stone, people can contact Easton at 509-246-0104 or Downing at 509-246-1685.
