Close to $5,000 awarded to contestants

MOSES LAKE - The 2008 Moses Lake Junior Miss was chosen Saturday night before a sell-out crowd in the Moses Lake High School theater.

Ashley Tucker was awarded $2,800 for winning first place, the scholastic achievement award, the self-expression award, the talent award and the fitness award during the 25th annual event, program co-chair Bonnie Dorris stated.

The first runner-up is Andrea Barlow, who won $900 in awards for her high placement in the 2008 court.

The second runner-up is Lilly Pyle, who won $800 in awards for her placement.

Other award winners included Lindsay Reis who won $200 with the Community Outreach award.

Anna Parton won $200 for the Spirit of Junior Miss award. She was nominated by her fellow contestants, Dorris stated.

Sasha Cervantes won $200 for giving the best interview.

"This year's program was dedicated to the City of Moses Lake, using the new logo as an accent on the girls' shirts and the slogan 'Jump In!' as the theme for the night," Dorris noted.

The program began with the contestants doing a routine to "Jump" recorded by The Pointer Sisters to set the theme in motion.

The past court consisting of 2007 Moses Lake Junior Miss Courtney Earl and runners-up Sarah Sherman and Ashley Cole also performed activities at the event and gave their farewells.

Dorris stated the most grueling event was the finale when the contestants performed a fitness routine to a few theme songs. The routine included jumping rope, aerobics, Tae Bo and strengthening movements.

Close to 500 people attended the event, she added.
