Quincy port offer for golf club accepted

Course opening expected in early May

QUINCY - The Port of Quincy just became the proud owner of a golf course.

The port district's $800,000 offer for the Quincy Golf Club was accepted by Quincy Golf Club LLC, district Commissioner Curt Morris told the Columbia Basin Herald Thursday.

"They accepted the offer," he said. "We're still in our 60-day due diligence period, but I don't suspect we'll have any insurmountable issues."

The owners are allowing the port early occupancy, so Morris called for watering to begin as early as Monday.

Morris and fellow commissioners Brian Kuest and Patric Connelly will make a walk through of the property with the owners Monday, he said.

"That's basically just to look at the buildings," he said.

The port hired a superintendent to start managing the ground, so Morris said the port will begin "ramping up" fertilization, irrigation and weed control.

"We can make a nice golf course out of it," Morris said. "It's going to take us a little time, but we're up for the challenge."

When the course opens depends upon the recommendation of the new greens superintendent, Morris said, although he estimated it would open sometime in early May.

"We don't want to damage the green," he said. "But they've accepted the offer, so we're good to go."
