Port of Quincy looks at golf course purchase again
QUINCY - The Port of Quincy is once again taking a look at the possible purchase of the Quincy Golf Club.
"We've looked at it again," confirmed Port of Quincy Commissioner Patric Connelly.
At a public meeting held last week, the commissioners received "pretty much overwhelming support" from public surveys, Connelly said.
At the meeting, the port passed a resolution to enter into a purchase and sales agreement with golf club owners Charley and Randy O'Banion, who were not available for comment.
"We haven't done that yet," Connelly said of the agreement. "We're just waiting to finalize that and if they agree on the sale agreement, we'll probably go ahead and buy it."
Connelly said the port was approached by many Quincy residents to get involved with the club.
"We also think it's a benefit and an asset to the community," he said. "It's also something we can use as a port to attract other businesses in, or show what we have for their people to do as far as recreation."
Connelly said the O'Banions are selling the club. The port last considered purchasing the club in the spring of 2007.
"Last year we could never agree on the price and then another gentleman came in that was going to purchase it," Connelly said. "That didn't work out, so we were approached by the O'Banions again for taking a look at it, and then we were also encouraged by the people to look at it again."
It's the third time the port has considered purchasing the club, Connelly said.
The port would "for the time being" talk to a person to manage the club, and then consider the options of leasing it out or continuing to operate it.
"We want to make some improvements to it, expand the RV park," Connelly said.
The port meets tonight at 5 p.m. at its office, located at 202 G St. S.E., to review the sales agreement.
"If that's successful, then we'll continue," Connelly said. "We've still got some other hoops to jump through to make sure everything's right."
Tonight's meeting is open to the public.
