ODESSA - After viewing the carnage from Odessa's 56-6 shellacking of Northeast League rival Almira/Coulee-Hartline on Friday night, few would've guessed the game pitted the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the latest eight-man football rankings.
No. 1 Odessa scored 30 points in the first period and went on to 56-6 victory over the Warriors at Finney Field, a game stopped after three quarters because of a state-mandated 45-point mercy rule.
The Tigers (4-0) have enacted the mercy rule on their last three opponents. Senior running back Jacob Schmidt dominated, scoring five touchdowns in the romp.
"We didn't play well at all, in any aspect of the game," ACH head coach Brandon Walsh said via e-mail. "We were flat and not ready to play as good of a football team as Odessa is."
Schmidt started the scoring with a 10-yard run. He added bursts of 25 and 24 yards to put Odessa ahead 36-6 at halftime, then scored from 41 and 7 yards in the third period.
Junior quarterback Ryan King also figured into a pair of touchdowns, hooking up with tight end Travis Todd on a 30-yard score and sneaking the ball in from 3 yards out.
Odessa's other score came courtesy of senior James Glenn, who returned a first-quarter interception 45 yards.
The Warriors' only points came in the second quarter as Jordan Hughes scored on a 45-yard run. Hughes carried 13 times for 92 yards on the night.
ACH (3-1), which will slip out of the No. 2 spot in next week's Associated Press 1B poll, tries to rebound this Friday when it hosts Pateros at 7 p.m. Odessa takes a week off before traveling to Curlew on Oct. 5.
"If we want to make a run toward the playoffs we have to get better than we played on Friday night," Walsh said.
