Polito wins twice, Chiefs second at district swim meet

McFarland, St. Onge receive league awards

ELLENSBURG - The Moses Lake High School swimming and diving team placed second over the weekend at the Columbia Basin League district meet at Central Washington University.

The Chiefs, who finished second to the Wenatchee Panthers during the CBL regular season, also took second behind the Panthers at districts. Additionally, senior captain Stephanie McFarland was named the 4A Swimmer of the Year by the league's coaches and Tony St. Onge was named the 4A Coach of the Year.

Sophomore Catherine Polito turned in Moses Lake's top two performances at CWU. Polito won the 200-yard freestyle event in a school-record time of 1 minute, 58.90 seconds. She also won the 100-yard freestyle.

Megan Schuh was second in the 100-yard backstroke and third in the 200-yard individual medley. Hannah Grigg took third in both the 100-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle events.

Moses Lake's three relay teams performed well. The 200 medley foursome of Ana Costa, Cari Cortez, McFarland and Polito was second in a state-qualifying time of 1:56.80. The 400 freestyle team of Schuh, Reilly Hourigan, McFarland and Polito was also second in its event, while the 200 freestyle team of Hourigan, Elaura Grant, Kim Kardong and Grigg took third.

Several swimmers have qualified for the 4A state meet on Nov. 8-10 at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way. Other district results for the Chiefs are listed below by event.

200 freestyle: Maryssa Thompson 12th, Danielle Ordway 16th.

200 individual medley: Cari Cortez fourth, Elaura Grant ninth, Megan Pyle 16th.

50 freestyle: Reilly Hourigan fifth, Stephanie McFarland seventh, Jessica Massart 14th.

Diving: Heather Devine fourth, Teal Delys ninth.

100 butterfly: Ana Costa ninth, Caroline Sharp 11th.

100 freestyle: Stephanie McFarland fourth, Reilly Hourigan sixth, Jessica Massart 13th.

500 freestyle: Kim Kardong seventh, Nanako Era 11th, Megan Pyle 15th.

100 backstroke: Ana Costa fifth, Caroline Sharp ninth, Alex Hammond 17th.

100 breaststroke: Cari Cortez fourth, Kim Kardong sixth, Elaura Grant ninth.
