Chiefs soccer wins final match

YAKIMA - The 2007 season wasn't a successful one in terms of wins for the Moses Lake girls soccer team, but the Chiefs salvaged some sense of pride in their final two games.

Fresh off a 1-0 victory over the Kennewick Lions on Senior Night four days earlier, the Chiefs closed the year with a 1-0 victory over the Davis Pirates on Saturday. The wins improved Moses Lake's final record to 3-13 overall, 1-11 in Columbia Basin League 4A play.

Davis had already clinched the league's final playoff berth, but Moses Lake held the Pirates' offense in check the entire game. The Chiefs got all the offense they'd need when Ang Solis - a student at Moses Lake Christian Academy - scored in the 62nd minute.

Moses Lake also got terrific goalkeeping from Kelly Sutherland and Bailey Ritchie. Sutherland stopped a couple fast breaks from the Pirates in the first half, and Ritchie swatted away a penalty kick in the second half. Chiefs head coach Ricardo Char cited both for performing beyond expectations.

The CBL 4A playoffs begin this afternoon as sixth-seeded Davis travels to No. 3 Eisenhower and No. 4 Walla Walla hosts No. 5 Wenatchee. Both are loser-out contests. Top-seeded Richland will face the lowest remaining seed on Saturday, and No. 2 Pasco plays the highest remaining seed on the same day.
