Prep sports recaps

FIFE - Catherine Polito continued her fantastic season on Thursday as the Moses Lake girls swimming team knocked off the Fife Trojans 100-70.

Polito earned state-qualifying times in two events, winning the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 0.5 seconds and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:24.56. The latter mark set a new school record, Moses Lake head coach Tony St. Onge said.

Polito also anchored the Chiefs' 200-yard freestyle relay squad, which sped to victory in 1:50.0. Polito was joined by Stephanie McFarland, Hannah Grigg and Cari Cortez in the event.

Two other relay teams had strong afternoons for Moses Lake. The 200 medley foursome of Ana Costa, Cortez, McFarland and Megan Schuh won their event in 2:01, while the 400 freestyle team of Reilly Hourigan, Grigg, Schuh and Polito was also victorious.

McFarland won a pair of events, finishing the 50 freestyle in 57.5 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 1:58.5. Schuh took the 200 individual medley title in 2:23.55, while Cortez won the 100 breaststroke (1:19.0).

The Chiefs improved their overall record to 5-1 and finish the regular season next Thursday at home against the Eisenhower Cadets, a 4 p.m. start. Many swimmers have already sewn up spots for the district championships, Oct. 26-27 in Ellensburg.

Selah 3, Ephrata 0

SELAH - Despite a sweep in their Central Washington Athletic Conference matchup with the defending 2A state champions on Thursday, Lady Tigers head coach Kim Crown had a lot of good things to say.

"I think it's the best ball we've played all year. We've improved tremendously," Crown said after the Vikings won by scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-23.

"We thought we were going to get that last game - we pushed them to the very end," Crown said.

Ephrata (4-6 CWAC) was led by Britney Ratigan's 13 kills and two aces. BreAnne Duff had 13 assists and five digs, Darcee Fales added seven kills and an ace, and Carli McDonnell chipped in nine digs.

The Lady Tigers play again next Tuesday, hosting Quincy at 7 p.m.

Pateros 3, Wilson Creek 0

PATEROS - Likewise, Devils head coach Mike Ottis was in a good mood after his girls dropped a straight-set decision to the Nannies in North Central Washington League play on Thursday.

"I think it was a productive loss because we put ourselves in a position where they know they can't roll over us," Ottis said after Pateros swept the regular-season series by scores of 26-24, 27-25 and 25-20.

"I'm not happy about (the loss) obviously, but if we meet them again at districts we've done what we need to do."

Wilson Creek (8-3 overall, 6-3 league) got a team-high 10 kills and two blocks from Holly Wilson. Jackie Treat added eight kills, while Ksenja Fredere had seven kills and two blocks. Ashley Gilley had a strong night at the service line, going 17 of 18 with four aces. The Devils missed just one serve as a team for the match.

Wilson Creek hosts Cascade Christian next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Ellensburg 3, Quincy 0

QUINCY - Lady Jackrabbits head coach Jeanne Brindle didn't have much good news to report as her team fell 25-5, 25-12, 25-3 to the visiting Bulldogs in a CWAC match on Thursday.

"It was just one of those nights where nothing seemed to go right," Brindle said. "And (Ellensburg) is a good team."

No individual statistics were reported. Quincy returns to the court Saturday when it plays at the Cascade High School tournament in Leavenworth, and its next league match is Tuesday at Ephrata, a 7 p.m. tip.

River View 3, Royal 0

ROYAL CITY - The visiting Panthers took control right from the get-go, earning a 25-11, 25-12, 25-13 victory over the Lady Knights in South Central Athletic Conference action on Thursday.

"River View is a very good team, but it didn't seem like the girls showed up tonight at all," Royal head coach Ashley Roberts said. "(River View) put up a very good block, so it's hard to get kills on them."

No individual stats were reported. Royal (4-5) goes back on the road next Tuesday, traveling to Warden at 7 p.m.

Kiona-Benton 1, Royal 0

ROYAL CITY - The visiting Bears earned a penalty kick in the 12th minute, converted it and held off the Lady Knights for an SCAC victory on Thursday.

"It was kind of a weird call," Royal head coach Jens Jensen said. "There were like four handballs previous to that he didn't call. With the girls, the call that's always in question is handballs."

Ki-Be had 15 shots on goal to Royal's eight, and Knights goalkeeper Danni Callahan made 10 saves.

"It was a good, hard-fought game," Jensen added. "We had opportunities to try and tie it up, and we just couldn't find the back of the net."

Royal continues league play next Tuesday, traveling to Wahluke for a 4 p.m. start.
