Fire prevention week runs through Saturday

MOSES LAKE - In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7 through Oct. 13, Grant County No. 5 Fire Department visited Longview Elementary School second-graders in Moses Lake.

Principal Robbie Mason kicked off a student assembly wearing fire gear and said she has a new respect for firefighters, since the gear was so heavy, according to second-grade teacher Sally Nicholas.

Grant County Fire District No. 5 showed a video featuring Sparky the Great Fire Dog explaining fire safety, including how to exit buildings, eliminate fire hazards, inspect homes, and create an E.D.I.T.H. (Exiting Drill in the Home) plan.

Following the assembly students went outside for informational tours of the fire department's fire truck, pump truck and ambulances, Nicholas stated.

Firefighters Jeff Prihar, Bob Horst and Kelsey Smith, along with paramedics Eva Van Beek and Todd Pyper gave details of the equipment and the functions each apparatus performs on the trucks, according to Nicholas.

Organizers said the kids were happy that Sparky was there to share the knowledge and importance of fire prevention.
