Moses Lake swimmers dominate Davis for CBL win

YAKIMA - The Moses Lake Chiefs set three more district qualifying marks and one state qualifying mark on Tuesday as they defeated the Davis Pirates 129-49 in a Columbia Basin League girls swimming and diving match.

Alex Hammond earned an automatic district berth in the 200-yard individual medley, with Ana Costa joining her in the 50-yard freestyle and Megan Pyle doing so in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Chiefs' 400-yard freestyle relay squad of Megan Schuh, Hannah Grigg, Stephanie McFarland and Catherine Polito did even better, earning an automatic qualifying time for November's 4A state meet in Federal Way.

Individual times were not available for any events. The Chiefs improved their league record to 4-0.

The foursome of Schuh, Polito, Cari Cortez and Stephanie McFarland earned a win in the 200 medley relay, with Costa, Sydnee Jones, Kim Kardong and Caroline Sharp finishing second. Reilly Hourigan, Dani Ordway, Costa and Nanako Era were second in the 400 freestyle relay.

Moses Lake also looked good in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of Kardong, Cortez, Grigg and Hourigan were victorious, and the team of Era, Elaura Grant, Pyle and Jones took third.

The Chiefs had a number of individual winners, beginning with Schuh in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. McFarland won the 50 freestyle race, with Hourigan winning the 100 freestyle and Cortez the 500 freestyle. Heather Devine was first in the diving competition.

Second-place honors went to Grigg in the 200 freestyle, Grant in the 200 IM, Hourigan in the 50 freestyle, Teal Delys in diving, Pyle in the 500 freestyle, Costa in the 100 backstroke and Cortez in the 100 breaststroke.

Finishing third in their respective events were Era in the 200 freestyle, Kardong in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, Ordway in the 500 freestyle and Sharp in the 100 backstroke.

Other point-scorers for the Chiefs included Maryssa Thompson, fourth in the 100 freestyle, and Grant, fourth in the 100 breaststroke.

Moses Lake's divers host a meet this Friday at 1 p.m. The entire squad is back in action next Tuesday, hosting the Wenatchee Panthers at 4 p.m. in what figures to be the decisive match for the CBL title.
