Lady Chiefs win bowling showdown

Moses Lake defeats Eisenhower in battle of unbeatens

MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake High School girls bowling team upped its Central Washington League record to 5-0 on Tuesday, defeating the Eisenhower Cadets at Lake Bowl.

In a battle of the two remaining undefeated squads, the Lady Chiefs knocked off the Cadets by taking three of four team points. Moses Lake swept the two scratch games, totaling 1,759 pins to Eisenhower's 1,710, then clinched the victory with a 145-137 in the first of two Baker-style games. The Cadets took the second Baker game 179-177.

Junior Virginia Valdez was the Lady Chiefs' leader on Tuesday, rolling team-high scores in both scratch games. She rolled five strikes and two spares in game one, finishing at 200 as Moses Lake won 836-826. Valdez then rolled a 203 as the Lady Chiefs scored a 923-884 win in game two.

Moses Lake's 923 was the league's highest single-game score this season, besting their earlier 896. The Cadets' 884 was the third-highest score of the year.

Coming into the match, the Lady Chiefs had four of the top 12 individual averages among league competitors.

Senior Michelle Reynolds, whose 175.25 average ranked third in the league, finished with a 152 in game one, but received help from her teammates. Shanice Brice, a freshman, rolled a two-game total of 346 and had 17 marks - spares or strikes - in a row. Senior Sandy Smith had a two-game total of 332, including a 198 in game two.

Sophomore Amanda Strezlczyk rounded out Moses Lake's varsity five and rolled a 187 in game two.

Last Thursday, the Chiefs easily defeated the Ellensburg Bulldogs, winning the scratch series 1,821-979 and the Baker series 1,234-660.

Valdez was Moses Lake's scratch series leader, rolling a two-game total of 371, and also had the one-game high of 225.

Brice finished at 162-174-336, Smith at 143-191-334, Strezlczyk at 148-150-298 and Reynolds at 140-154-294.

Last Tuesday, Moses Lake won at Wenatchee, overcoming an 836-804 loss in game one of the scratch series. The Chiefs won game two in a 896-752 landslide, then capped things off with a 190 Baker game in which they marked in every frame.

Reynolds fired a team-high 209 in game two and finished with a team-leading 184 average. Valdez (187), Smith (182) and Brice (176) also had terrific second games for the Chiefs.

Moses Lake currently leads the five-team Yakima Division by a game over Eisenhower. The Chiefs return to action next Tuesday when they host the Pasco Bulldogs (1-3) at Lake Bowl. Start time is 3:30 p.m.
