Migrant Head Start to set up service in Quincy

QUINCY — The Washington State Migrant Council is constructing a building for a Migrant Head Start on Quincy School District property.

Originally, the organization planned to install two portables at the site, located at the southeast corner of George Elementary School.

Installing the portables would have cost approximately $160,000, not including delivery or set-up, said District Superintendent Roger Fox. The Migrant Council found constructing a building would cost less.

"They can literally build a building cheaper," Fox said.

He noted the building is still going to be portable.

Migrant Head Start serves children, from four months old through five years old, with a free education, plus breakfast, lunch and snacks. It is a federally funded program offered full time, five days per week through the Washington State Migrant Council.

The organization signed a lease for the property with the Quincy School District for $600 per month, lasting until 2017.

The Washington State Migrant Council operates more than 20 head start programs in the state. The seasonal program runs from May through October.

A similar program is already located on H Street in Quincy. Students are bused from George to Quincy for the program.
